Besides being a profession, interior design is a career a vocation and above all a lifestyle. While there are several institutions offering various courses in interior design, to successfully practice interior design, it is important to know what the profession entails.

Interior design is one of the most exciting and creative professions that combines art, science, craftsmanship and technology in practice. Besides, interior design works best by manipulating space, form, texture, colour and light to enhance the quality of interiors of buildings.

Unlike wild animals that live all their lives in the jungle (exterior space), human beings spend a considerable amount of their lives indoors in interior spaces. They sleep in interior spaces of buildings, then wake up in the same interior spaces. After which, they go to school or for the day’s work at their places of work; in other interior spaces. Even though humans briefly go outside these interior spaces, the amount of time spent outdoors is usually a fraction of the time spent indoors.

The reason why we should be concerned about designing interior spaces is that the environment a human being lives in has a direct correlation with their overall well-being. Well designed interior spaces can significantly contribute to our well being as humans besides serving as our shelters.

The work of interior designers, therefore, becomes very important. As more humans become urbanised, the more relevant interior designers will continue to be in our day to day lives. Therefore, interior design is the profession of converting ordinary interior spaces so that they serve the basic needs of the occupants while at the same time creating positive and uplifting interior environments. In doing their interior designs, interior designers consider the following factors that are very important when transforming spaces. They include access, exit, ergonomics, safety, aesthetics, the purpose of the interior space, culture among others.

It is important to note that interior design is a dynamic profession that changes over time. This is a consequence of technological advancements, research, culture among other environmental factors. It is therefore important that an interior designer keeps track of these changes taking place at both the local and global level to be at per with new developments in the industry.
