Interior design is a broad profession. It involves planning and designing interior spaces to make them liveable. To do this, trades such as finish carpentry and upholstery come in handy. Considering other factors such as the design objectives and light, various furniture are fabricated to blend with the chosen theme. This makes an understanding of the various types of furniture important to an interior designer.

There are various types of furniture in interior design. These furniture serve various purposes in these interior design spaces. For example, we've furniture that are designed for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms; the list is endless depending on the context. The following are the main types of furniture in interior design.

a) Sofas

Sofas are among the most common furniture in homes, offices among other interior spaces. Sofas are designed as a tool of welcoming visitors, customers or could be for relaxation. This has made them suitable for living rooms, reception areas of companies although they could be used in other areas in a house.

There are various types of Sofas. They include Sectional Sofas, Recliner Sofas, Lawn Couch, English, Bridgewater, Camelback, Cabriole, Chase Lounge, Sleeper Sofa, Love Seat, Settee Sofa, Tuxedo among others.

b) Tables 

Tables are furniture that are mostly used to serve, eat food and drink. Tables could also be used to hold meetings, read, or have a discussion. There are different types of tables that serve various purposes in interior spaces. Examples of tables include Coffee tables, Accent tables, Console tables, Side tables, C-tables, Drink tables, End tables, Dinning tables, Drum tables, Foyer tables, Kitchen tables, Pub tables, Worktables, Conference tables, Computer tables among others.

c) Chairs

Are furniture designed for seating. Just like Sofas and tables, there are different types of chairs designed for interior spaces in a home, the office or the pub. They include Accent Chairs, Armchairs, Recliner chairs, Reading chairs, Barstools, Desk chairs, Dining room chairs among others.

d) Bed

A bed is a piece of furniture used for purposes of sleeping, relaxing or resting. A bed is mostly a framework/structure that houses a mattress. This type of furniture are placed in bedrooms, lodgings and hotel rooms. Even though the most common bed sizes and types are known, there are over fifty different bed sizes and countless different types. The type and size often depend on factors such as the size of the bedroom, preferences, number of users among others.

The different types of beds by size include Single beds, Twin beds, Twin XL beds, Double beds, Full beds, Queen-size beds, King-size beds, Double-decker beds among others.

e) Wall Units

A wall unit is a piece of furniture having various sections and compartments, designed to stand against a wall. Besides creating space for storage, wall units are also used for decorating or redecorating interior spaces and could act as focal points in interior design. Besides storage and aesthetics, these units are meant to save space. Wall units include a variety of interior design furnishings such as bookshelves, dining utensils storage room units, living room units among others. When making these units, an interior designer could use locally available inexpensive materials or could buy prefabricated units from a furniture dealer or store.

Over the years, wall units have been used for various purposes such as to redecorate interior space, storage of utensils, as bookshelves among others. In other words, the design of a wall unit depends on the room it will be located and the purpose of the design.

f) Dressers

A dresser is a piece of furniture of the cabinet type that is used for storage of largely cosmetic products, perfumes among other things used when dressing. Most drawers are usually designed to reach wait high with room for a minor above. However, we have others that have a height rising beyond the waistline.
